Revopoint POP 4 Plus from $579 coming to Kickstarter
Revopoint has just launched the Revopoint POP 4 Plus on pre-order at kickstarter for as low as $579. With the track-record of Revopoint and the specs and features, this sounds like a super deal, as long as you’re OK with waiting.. Here’s what I know.
The new Revopoint POP 4 Plus is really packed with all the features to make the best entry-level 3D scanner for “generic use”. A set of hybrid Laser and Infrared scanning you get the best of both worlds. Laser for complex surfaces and accurate mechanical parts and details. Or VCSEL (Vertical-Cavity Surface-Emitting Laser AKA Near infra red light) for larger, less detailed surfaces and people. All at up to 105fps, meaning you capture so much data at once, that tracking should be easier while also being able to scan a person quick enough that they can keep their pose.
With a large area coverage (in Near/far mode?) you can scan both 200mm away (focusing on the small parts with high detail) or up to 800mm away, covering larger areas with fewer details to track.
What hybrid laser scanning actually means
There are some important clarification to do on the POP 4 Plus. The laser-mode is for smaller parts, think carburators, shoes, shiny metals, dark plastic parts etc, up to around 1-2m maximum. For laser-scanning, markers are needed to maintain the exceptional volumetric accuracy of 0,03mm (+ 0.05mm per Meter scanned).
The laser mode uses 30 cross-laser-lines at up to 105fps to very quickly cover your part. A single-laser line mode is excellent to track deep inside small holes, capturing more references, or even all the way through.
Laser scanning is best done inside.
VCSEL Structured-light 3D scanning
The Non-laser scanning can be done outside, even in direct sunlight (according to Revopoint). The VCSEL scanning (basically Near-infrared scanning) operates on a larger field of view, making it great for capturing larger parts like busts, people, furniture and similar, I’d estimate objects from around 50cm to 2-3m.
The VCSEL scanning mode don’t need markers, so you’re much more free when you’re scanning. However, that also means the objects can’t be perfectly symmetrical or flat in it’s features. Scanning a flat table will be difficult, but a rock-wall or wooden furniture will be much easier.
In this mode you can also get color scanning of your objects. Revopoint is pushing “Gaussian 3D models” but that sounds like a marketing term, and not really a gaussian splatting conversion of the 3D scanned colored models, but this remains to be seen, as well as if the laser mode allows for color scanning as well.
Is the Pop 4 Plus the perfect 3D scanner?
Without having testing it I can’t tell for sure, but the marketing is probably a bit extreme in this case, and it sounds like you can do anything with this scanner.
That’s probably not true since Revopoint have scanners like the Inspire II that does similar levels/scales of scanning at $494 (check it out here, available now), or higher accuracy metrology-scanners made for scanning at reliable(verifiable accuracy) like the Metro Y scanners (see here) or the overall champion: TrackIt that covers both small and large (cars) objects at incredible accuracy.
It’s also very easy to forget how the Pop 4 Plus is actually configured; two scanning modes covering “one side” of the total volume communicated; Laser for small and detailed parts and VCSEL for the large parts and humans. So you’re not fully avoiding markers in laser mode.
Revopoint POP 4 Technical specs
These are the specs we’ve been able to get so far. When it launches on Kickstarter, we’ll have more information.
Scanning formfactor: Handheld (and wireless option)
MSRP (base version): $919 - early bird from $579
Scanning light: blue laser (30 lines or 1 line mode) and Near Infrared Projection (VCSEL)
Scanning tracking: Features, color and reflective markers depending on mode
Scanning volume: Two modes covering 200-800mm distance
Scanning FOV: unknown now
Scanning speed: Up to 105fps in Laser mode
Scanning accuracy (laser): up to 0.03mm and an additional 0.05mm/m
Scanning mesh resolution (laser): up to 0.1mm
Scanning accuracy (NIR/VCSEL): Unspecified
Scanning mesh resolution (NIR/VCSEL): up to 0.3mm
Portability: Wirelss option (with smart-handle?) and phone app/connection.
Computer requirment: Yes for post-processing of scans.
Is the value of Revopoint Pop 4 legit?
The real value here comes in the pre-ordering at $5xx via Kickstarter, where the laser modes with many cross-lasers and single-line laser mode is actually quite competitive. But at full MSRP, this looks great, but not amazing from what I can see now.
So if you’re OK with waiting for shipping, this IS a real step up from the now heavily discounted Inspire II, but there is a lot of overlap.
